August 6, 1928 - April 16, 2024

Dr. Stewart Foster McCollom Sr. died peacefully at home in Ashland, Oregon on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Born in Portland, Oregon on August 6, 1928, he was the fourth child of Dr. John Wallace McCollom and his wife, Helen Foster McCollom.

He was an avid skier for his entire life, and he enlisted in the ski troops of the Tenth Mountain Division of the US Army near the end of WWII.

Stewart graduated from the University of Oregon in 1952, and later earned graduate degrees from Boston University and the University of Wyoming.

He was married to Anne Rogers McCormack on August 14, 1957, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, Oregon. They lived in Portland until 1960 when they moved to Wyoming, where Stewart began work on his Doctorate in Education at The University of Wyoming.

Upon his graduation in June 1964, the McColloms returned to Gearhart, Oregon where both their families had spent summers and Anne had grown up. Stewart began work at Clatsop Community College in Astoria as an Administrator and became President in 1966.

In 1969 the family travelled to Europe with their four children, aged thirteen, ten, five and three, where they lived and travelled for a year in a Volkswagen bus. On their return to Oregon in 1970, Stewart began working at Southern Oregon College in Ashland, Oregon as the Executive Assistant to President James K. Sours. After retiring from the college, Stewart was elected Jackson County Commissioner in 1984 and served for four years.

After his retirement, Dr. McCollom volunteered for many non-profit entities in Southern Oregon, including working 28 years as a Mental Health Counselor for “Age Wise Age Well” through Jackson County Mental Health and Pacific Retirement Services.

Stewart is survived by wife of 66 years Anne, and their four children: Hilary, Stewart Jr. (Nora Farwell), Molly (Gregg Hendrix), and Andrew (Sheri Lichtenstein), his three grandchildren; Sarah (Cliff Sumner), Jamie, Tom, and great granddaughter Emma Anne Sumner.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Trinity Episcopal Church, 44 N 2nd St, Ashland, OR 97520.
